The Geneva Lakes Family YMCA is pleased to announce that the Milwaukee Brewers are recognizing John Swanson, head coach of the YMCA Dream Team Baseball program, as recipient of the Milwaukee Brewers Community Achievers Award.
Swanson will receive his award at Miller Park in Milwaukee on Tuesday, April 22 during the Brewers vs. Padres game. He will be recognized on the field and will throw the opening pitch. The game begins at 7:10 pm.
The Brewers Community Achievers Award recognizes volunteers, philanthropists and other community heroes that have helped their neighborhoods in extraordinary ways. Swanson certainly fits the bill. He’s being recognized for his efforts to organize and lead the YMCA Dream Team Baseball program, and for his long-time commitment to volunteer for Special Olympics programs.
The YMCA Dream Team is a volunteer-led, co-ed baseball program for special needs children in Walworth County. The program is entering its 11th year under Swanson’s direction. More than 70 kids with special needs play ball on the YMCA Dream Team, and each one benefits from Swanson’s compassionate, caring coaching style and his love and knowledge of baseball. Without the YMCA Dream Team and Swanson’s leadership, passion and vision, these children and their families may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy and play in an organized baseball program.
The 2014 YMCA Dream Team season begins June 18, 2014. Games are held at Veteran’s Park on Monday and Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30 pm. Program registration is open until May 15. For those interested in volunteering, contact the YMCA at 262-248-6211.
