The Geneva Lakes Family YMCA is pleased to announce that Amber Johnson, head swim coach for the Geneva Y Swim Team (GYST) was awarded the Association of YMCA Professionals (AYP) "Rookie of the Year" award for her leadership skills, initiative to succeed and outstanding achievements as a new YMCA program director.
Amber was recognized at the Wisconsin/Upper Peninsula AYP fall conference on Oct. 10 in Oshkosh. This event was attended by nearly 200 regional YMCA professionals and leaders.
Amber joined the Geneva Lakes YMCA in April of 2013. She was tasked with reviving a dwindling competitive swim program and developing a high-quality, year-round team that supports the YMCA mission and goals and needs of swimmers of all ages and abilities. She kicked off her first season with a team of just seven kids. Today, her youth swim team roster has more than 50 swimmers and continues to grow with each session. She also revamped the YMCA’s Master’s swim team that has grown to more than 30 participants.
“Amber is very deserving of this award,” said Mike Kramp, YMCA CEO/executive director. “She is a strong leader and incredible asset not only to our local Y, but to the national organization as a whole. Her passion for the YMCA mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body shines through in everything she does. I believe it’s a key reason for the team’s growth and our swimmers’ success.”
Outside of the pool, Amber is an active volunteer. She teaches her swimmers the importance and value of volunteerism and seeks out ways for the team to be involved in community-strengthening events.
The team’s next volunteer event will be on Nov. 21 at the Feed My Starving Children center in Libertyville, Ill. Team members and their families will work together to package nutritious meals that will be shipped to malnourished children around the world. The Geneva Y Swim Team will host a free swim team trial night on Nov. 5 at 6 pm at the YMCA.
Children ages 6 and older who have the ability and desire to be a part of a competitive swim program are invited to attend. For more information, visit lakegenevayswimteam.com or call the YMCA at 262-248-6211.
