YMCA Receives Grant Funding for Healthy Air and Water for Healthy Families Initiative

Published 09.12.15

LAKE GENEVA, Aug. 5, 2015 – The Geneva Lakes Family YMCA is pleased to announce it has received $17,000 in grant funding to support its Healthy Air and Water for Healthy Families initiative.

The foundations supporting the Y’s project are the Kikkoman Foods Foundation ($5,000), the Wagner Foundation ($5,000), the O’Neill Foundation ($5,000), the Styberg Foundation ($1,000) and Mercy Health Systems ($1,000).

The YMCA Healthy Air and Water for Healthy Families initiative involves upgrading the Y’s swimming pool disinfection equipment and installing high-tech Ultra Violet (UV) systems on its two pools by the end of 2015.

UV is considered the best technology and healthiest choice for swimming pool disinfection. It offers numerous health, safety and environmental benefits over traditional chlorine disinfection systems.

According YMCA executive director Mike Kramp, the Healthy Air and Water for Healthy Families project comes in direct response to the USA Swimming Association’s recommendation that all existing indoor pools be upgraded with UV systems.

Kramp explained that health advocacy groups are voicing a concern about air and water quality in indoor aquatic environments. He said there are studies that show a link between chlorine by-products in indoor pools and increased asthma and allergy cases.

The YMCA installed a UV system on its warm-water activity pool in the spring and now has the funds needed to complete the project and install UV in its lap pool. UV will be available in the lap pool in December.

“Our new UV systems will provide excellent air and water quality in our facility,” Kramp said. “It will make our pools and programs accessible to the growing number of people who have chlorine-induced asthma and allergies, and improve the health and comfort of the 6,000-plus people in our community who use and work at our Y.  We are very grateful to the foundations and organizations that are supporting this project. They are making a direct investment in the health of our community,” he said.
