March 23, 2016 -- LAKE GENEVA, WI, – The Geneva Lakes Family YMCA’s masters and youth swim teams capped another successful winter season.
Masters team members Matt Oglesby, Steele Whowell, Jason Clark & Mark Larkin competed at the US Masters meet in Whitefish Bay, Wisc. on March 6. Together, they had a record-setting performance in the 400 Medley relay. Their winning time of 3:47.66 set a new Wisconsin Masters Swimming record in the men’s 35+ age bracket. Nationally, it is the 7th fastest time ever to be swam. The team also took 1st place in the 200 medley relay.
Individually, Larkin took first place in the men’s 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. Oglesby, Whowell and Clark took 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the men’s 50-yard butterfly.
As for the Y’s youth team, the GYST swimmers had a very strong showing at the YMCA sectionals meeting in Oconomowoc March 12-13. Thirty-one team members competed in a total of 174 events, with the majority achieving personal best times.
The following swimmers placed in the top 10 in their events: Mary Davenport, Morgan Hallat, Evan and Noah Langlund, Ava Pether, Amanee Vasquez, Lilly Westlund, Colton Clark, Audra Ferguson and Addi Nelson.
Clark, Ferguson and Nelson also qualified for and competed in the Wisc. State YMCA meet in Milwaukee March 19-20. Clark, competing in the boys eight and under age division, took 2nd place in the 50-yard breaststroke. He placed 2nd in the 25 and 50-yard butterfly events, and 3rd in the 25-yard breaststroke.
Nelson and Ferguson achieved personal best times in all of their events. Nelson took 13th place in her 100-yard backstroke in the girls 9-10 age category. Ferguson placed 13th in the girls 11-12 age bracket in the 100-yard breaststroke. She placed 15th in her 50-yard breaststroke.
“I’m so proud of our swimmers, and I applaud each of them for an incredible season,” said head coach Lindsey Mikrut. “The kids and masters swimmers are incredibly dedicated to our team and to the sport of swimming. We work hard, but we have a lot of fun, too, and that’s a winning combination for success,” Mikrut said.
GYST is gearing up for its spring swim season, which runs April 25-June 10. A free swim team trial and level placement is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at 5pm at the Y, located at 203 S. Wells St. in Lake Geneva. Contact Lindsey Mikrut at 262-248-6211 with questions.
