Safety Around Water Program Manager

Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Organizes and implements quality YMCA water safety programs at multiple locations, if needed. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with students and builds cooperative relationships with community partners and parents, and caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all students in programs. Advocates water safety and facilitate peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.

This seasonal position is not guaranteed every school year; it is dependent on dollars raised from grants and fundraising.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee day-to-day program operation and ensure consistency with evidence-based practices.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values
  • Helps to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participants
  • Coordinates participant enrollment and placement including maintaining pool schedule.
  • Assigns and schedules Safety Around Water program sessions.
  • Communicates with all partners to promote the program and with parents and caregivers about program delivery to increase participation
  • May recruit, retain, and supervise assigned staff (e.g., Swim Instructors and lifeguards who facilitate program delivery)
  • May identify and assess suitability of off-site locations to use for program delivery
  • Maintains and submits all necessary forms and documentation, including procedures, in-service reports, accident and incident reports, and staff certifications.
  • Makes decisions regarding the cancellation of classes in the event of inclement weather, pool malfunction, and the like, and communicates the information to all affected staff, participants, partners, and A.D.
  • Coordinates emergency action plans and oversees program safety that aligned with the YMCA’s safety requirements
  • Able to act as a program spokesperson

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum age of 21

Experience teaching and/or organizing aquatic programs

Proven track record of sound judgment and good decision making; the ability to lead others; knowledge of aquatic programming; and the ability to communicate effectively—verbally and in writing—with participants, partners, staff, and A.D.

Ability to provide motivational counseling and effectively communicate information about the Y’s programs to the community

Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid within 60 days of hire

Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire

Meets requirements as Swim Instructor if called upon to step into role

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift any size child from the water
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance, in normal and loud situations.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Update contact list for schools for AD and have good working relationships with the school liaison to get lists and waivers.
  • Be able to accommodate schools with class sizes, kids with special needs, bathroom concerns, and any other concerns.
  • Think outside the box and help come up with solutions to help bring schools into the S.A.W. program.
  • Mentor swim instructors to become more efficient at their jobs by watching, listening, and asking questions to help instructors gain skills and knowledge.
  • Filling out skill assessment sheets and letters that go home with swim lesson level.
  • Help cover or find cover for shifts when a scheduled swim instructor does not show up for their shift.

*School year (September 2026 – May 2027) Administrative time allotted = up to 30 hours; in water SAW instruction = up to 165 hours for the entire school year.
