Senior Youth & Family Director:

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director, the Senior Youth & Family Director is a key leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising high-quality programs that strengthen youth, families, and the overall community. This position provides strategic oversight and direct leadership to multiple program areas, including Youth Programs, Family Programs, Child Watch, YBase, Preschool Programs, and Camp operations, ensuring alignment with the YMCA mission, values, and safety standards. The Senior Youth & Family Director leads and mentors a team of program directors and coordinators, including the School Age Childcare and Preschool Director, Camp Director, and Montessori Director, to deliver meaningful and impactful experiences for children, teens, and families. This role collaborates closely with executive leadership to achieve association goals, manages departmental budgets, drives membership and program participation, and maintains high standards of staff training, child protection, and program quality. The ideal candidate is a mission-driven, relationship-focused leader who excels in collaboration, communication, and creative program development. They demonstrate strong organizational management skills, experience supervising multi-program departments, and a passion for nurturing youth and strengthening families. Develops and implements comprehensive program plans that nurture the potential of youth, teens, and families. Incumbent must role model the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and work daily to develop relationships with members, participants, staff, and others.

Essential Functions

 

The Senior Youth & Family Director will:

  • Provide Strategic Leadership Across Youth & Family Departments. Lead, supervise, and develop directors and coordinators overseeing Youth Programs, Family Programs, Child Watch, YBase, Preschool Programs, Camp operations, and Montessori programs. Ensure all programs align with YMCA mission, values, safety protocols, and strategic priorities.
  • Develop and Implement High‑Quality Program Experiences. Create, evaluate, and refine comprehensive program plans that nurture the potential of children, teens, and families. Ensure programs are engaging, developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.
  • Drive Program Growth, Membership Engagement, and Community Impact. Strengthen member and participant experience through relationship-building, excellent service, and consistent quality. Support initiatives that increase program enrollment, retention, and connection to YMCA services.
  • Ensure Highest Standards of Child Protection and Safety. Maintain strict adherence to YMCA child protection policies, risk management procedures, and state licensing requirements. Ensure staff understand and consistently implement safety guidelines across all program areas.
  • Lead Recruitment, Training, and Performance Management of Staff. Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and evaluate program directors, coordinators, and frontline staff. Provide ongoing coaching to build a positive culture rooted in YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Manage Departmental Budgets and Financial Performance. Develop and oversee budgets for all Youth & Family program areas. Monitor financial performance, manage expenses responsibly, and drive revenue through strong program participation.
  • Collaborate with Executive Leadership on Association-Wide Goals. Work closely with the Associate Executive Director and leadership team to align departmental strategies with organizational objectives. Contribute to long-range planning, community outreach efforts, and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Ensure High Standards of Program Quality and Continuous Improvement. Conduct regular program audits, site visits, and staff observations. Implement improvements based on data, feedback, evaluation tools, and best practices.
  • Strengthen Community Relationships and Partnerships. Build and maintain strong relationships with families, community organizations, schools, and volunteers. Represent the YMCA in the community to promote programs and enhance visibility.
  • Act as a Mission-Driven Leader and Role Model. Create a welcoming environment for all members, participants, and staff. Demonstrate YMCA core values in all interactions and foster positive relationships daily.
  • Build personal and meaningful relations with YMCA staff, members, participants, volunteers, guests, donors, and community schools and churches, etc. Work daily to nurture the potential of all youth, teens, and families.
  • Develop and implement a variety of programs that nurture potential youth, teens, family, and community needs, including but not limited to:
    • YBASE/Wrap Around Care
    • Preschool Enrichment Programs
    • Youth & Family Programs
    • School Days Out (holiday and snow days)
    • Summer Day Camp
  • Designing, planning, and executing a diverse schedule of youth and family development programs, special events, clubs, night outs, workshops, etc., for all members and community participants. Scheduling, planning and oversight of association-wide special events.  Seeks out community partnership opportunities and attends association functions and events to promote the Y, its mission, and programs.
  • Drives strong recruitment, development, and succession planning processes to ensure all special events and community partnerships are successful.  Develop strategies to motivate staff and volunteers to achieve event or project goal include project budget work, along with securing donations, ordering, etc. Keeps all volunteer records for the annual report and audit.
  • Identifies and builds relationships with internal and/or external partners or key stakeholders, such as service groups, community organizations, or companies, to support programs or projects. Play an active role in the Association’s support campaigns.
  • Maintain accurate records on all employees, including required certifications and trainings, and conduct scheduled performance reviews. Be “hands-on” in program areas.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through observation and program evaluations from participants or parents at least once per year. Organize and inventory supplies needed for programs.
  • Work as a member of the staff team and work with all in a positive manner; assist in developing and leading special events. Attend all staff trainings and meetings as required.
  • Manage conflict, problems, and emergencies, taking appropriate actions without waiting for directions.
  • Hire, train, and schedule staff in assigned program areas, along with Child Watch area. Hire, train, and schedule staff with the help of the Child Watch Coordinator. Create and schedule all program/camp sessions and activities.
  • Monitor daily operations. Secure facilities for field trips/camp activities.
  • Schedule and organize all assigned program areas for building usage. Secure equipment and supplies for programs. Organize staff communications & meetings for program staff.

Principal Activities

  • All other assignments assigned by the Associate Executive Director.

  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include: CPR, First Aid, AED.
  • Pre-hire: Completion of the YMCA’s Praesidium Child Abuse Prevention courses

Qualifications

 

  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications within 60 days of hire date.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Technical degree in a related field or equivalent preferred.
  • Certification or licensing in related fields is a plus.
  • 5-8 years of experience in the related field. Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Must complete four Praesidium Child Abuse Courses prior to start date.
